Do Heat Pumps work?
Heat pumps use large quantities of low-grade heat energy in the ground, air or water and convert it to high-grade heat for water heating or space heating in a dwelling. The source of this heat in the UK is 99% from the sun and as long as the heat pump does not remove more energy on an annual basis than is replaced by the sun; the system will be balanced and sustainable. The energy required to run a heat pump is a lot less than the energy generated by the heat pump and whereas the heat pump does use outside energy (electricity), if designed correctly, they have the capacity to provide a sustainable energy source at a potentially lower cost than many traditional energy sources. If the energy required to run the heat pump is also from a renewable source, then a truly sustainable heating solution is possible. The efficiency of a heat pump is referred to as the Coefficient of Performance (COP). This is the ratio of the amount of heat energy you get for every kWh of electricity you use at a

Why are there different ways to buy a heat pump and what is the difference?
When you think about options for heating your home, you may have already decided that it is time to install a heat pump. This may seem like a simple decision: Engage a plumber – get them to install a heat pump – job done! If only it was that simple. The truth is that the way you procure and install the heat pump can have a big influence on system performance, warranties and maintenance. For those new to the heat pump industry an installer must have a number of credentials and accountabilities to be able to fit a heat pump. There must be a suitably qualified and experienced competent person to install the electrics and the plumbing, especially the hot water cylinder. There must be someone who designs the system in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions and there must also be someone who makes sure that the installation complies with MCS design and MCS Installation guidance. MCS is the Microgeneration Certification Scheme and provides guidance and certification for Renewable tec
